The Warehouse

  • On the Rode Weeshuisstraat, 'The Warehouse' was recently completed. The former V&D distribution building now houses a store and 24 compact, luxury apartments, distributed over four floors. The closed distribution facade has been replaced by an open, transparent facade. This has transformed the first floor and the basement into an attractive retail space with a lot of glass. Large voids behind the glass façade connect the basement with the first floor and the street. In the design De Zwarte Hond makes grateful use of the characteristic elements of the reconstruction architecture. The concrete construction gives the interior a loft-like, industrial atmosphere. In this way the post-war architecture is given a new 21st century life.
This project is part of the collaboration with real estate developers MWPO and Beauvast with which De Zwarte Hond is transforming the Rode Weeshuisstraat in the center of Groningen from a dark back street into a lively part of the city center. In addition to the conversion of the former distribution building, work is also underway on the transformation of the old V&D building and the construction of Mercado. This market hall with 41 apartments above it was designed by the architectural combination De Zwarte Hond and Loer Architects. The three projects together provide a revitalization of the public space. Urban planning and architecture are combined and integrated to make the (inner) city better.
