THE KINGSTON ACADEMY

ASTUDIO

Project description

The Kingston Academy is a 1,188 pupil high school of approx. 10,000sqm, consisting of an existing building refurbishment and an extension of twice its size. The new extension mimics the existing building’s shape, maintaining internal functional clarity, and emphasises the school’s technology-based curriculum through diverse, inspiring spaces. The building’s heart is the top-lit double-height central atrium dedicated to dining/events. Careful attention was given to design quality and detail, with transparent connections creating a sense of permeability throughout. The main façade is rich in detail, with expressed white aluminium columns, recessed horizontal render bands and vertical full-height windows alternated with metal panels in different shades of red to blend with the surroundings. The Academy fulfils the community’s need for a local high-school, and local people benefit from its sports facilities, reinforcing the Academy’s position as a vital service at the heart of its community.
