The Beauty of Deconstructivism

Oft Interiors

Project description

The UA Cinema in Shanghai wants to express its desire to subvert tradition and break away from the established framework through design, so it adopts the "deconstructionism" which represents the trend of post-modern architecture. Since the late 1980s, some architects, influenced by the French philosopher De Guida, began to incorporate his Deconstructivism into their designs, using a lot of irregular lines, geometric patterns and informal three-dimensional shapes. The cinema joins this uprising by rethinking the use and meaning of space. The design of the lobby is a thorough embodiment of the aesthetics of deconstruction: ethereal, surreal, unstable and open forms, in order to surprise and impress the audience. The ceiling here is not a fixed flat surface, but rather a series of irregularly shaped columns descending from above. Standing in the middle of the lobby, there is almost a slight sense of pressure. These columns also function as a source of light, enhancing the contrast between the matte champagne gold and the glossy grey baskets. The ceilings, walls and floor have their own individual patterns and lines, but in similar colours; as if disparate yet interconnected. The white pillars contain fine lines of champagne gold, while the champagne gold pillars emit white light, revealing a unique pattern of deconstructive thinking.
