House for a pianist

Pedra Liquida

Project description

This single-family house is located in a typical Porto’s urban lot, of two fronts, with a narrow width (4.4 m) when compared to its length. This difficulty was converted into an opportunity to distribute the program around a central staircase, articulating the two fronts, and which is crowned by a curved skylight – a usual solution in Porto. The project reinvents this tradition, avoiding any architectural pastiche. The raw facades, in exposed concrete, present an abstract composition, which is reinforced by the draped stereotomy of its surfaces. The interior spaces prolong that same formal and material straightforwardness. The house stands among other eclecticist buildings, contrasting with their shapes and colors, not for its exuberance, but for its narrowness, verticality and simplicity.
