Short description

Located in the heart of the NoMad neighborhood of Manhattan is Apotheke NoMad—a stunningly designed, bi-level bar, featuring a subterranean speakeasy, penthouse lounge, and rooftop terrace. Guided by the words “ancient future,” the overall concept of Apotheke NoMad takes its inspiration from old-world, regal, grandiose apothecaries where natural remedies were created from plants, roots, and botanicals. That’s why stepping inside Apotheke brings you into a world that is both nostalgic and novel.

As guests descend a staircase lined with hundreds of dried herbs and wildflowers, a pair of sage green velvet curtains part to unveil a warmly lit room, anchored by a glowing 20-foot rosa aurora marble bar. A hand-carved back bar displays a colorful array of infused spirits, fresh herbal tonics, and house-made bitters. The materials utilized in this space not only add warmth – like reclaimed barnwood floors inlaid with vintage ceramic tile – but also work to absorb sound – as in the custom upholstery wall made of fabric printed with Apotheke’s emblem.

Located on the 11th floor of the building and only accessible via the private elevator in the cellar speakeasy are the penthouse and rooftop terrace. Whereas downstairs breeds a mysterious, moody character, the penthouse bar feels slightly more feminine, with a color palette of dusty rose, and rich reclaimed barnwood accented in gold leaf. The high-ceilinged penthouse lounge is adorned by a floor-to-ceiling wall of breathtaking custom stained-glass windows, each panel a painstaking work of art that features the Apotheke name. The magic hour here is near sunset, when the light pierces through the windows and throws stunning glowing colors around the room with dazzling effects. The penthouse terrace wraps all around the lounge providing unparalleled views of the nearby Empire State Building, Madison Square Park, and the new NoMad Piazza below.

As the goal for the design of Apotheke NoMad was to reflect the apothecaries from the past, the team worked to ensure every facet of the design would replicate the grandiosity of old-world apothecaries. The ornateness can be seen in the channels in the speakeasy ceiling, which are clad with handprinted wallpaper and capped with mirrors to create an illusion of infinity, the vibrantly colored upholstery seats, and the lively floor-to-ceiling stained-glass windows in the penthouse.

Apotheke NoMad also wanted every part of the guest experience to elevate all five senses through plants. From the scents of cypress, cardamom, and jasmine that burn in a custom house fragranced candle, to the bar that is lined with glass vessels holding bushels of fresh herbs and the sippable cocktails that invite guests to explore the wonders of nature, Apotheke NoMad is an homage to the old-world apothecaries that derived natural remedies from plants and herbs.
