Alobar Downtown
Mason Studio Inc.
Short description
Alobar delivers world class food, hospitality, and style in Toronto. A staple dining destination within the Michelin-star rated Alo Food Group brand, Alobar embodies an elevated experience with laid-back spirit and comfortable setting. Capturing the personality of renowned chef Patrick Kriss is embedded in the space is woven throughout tactile details.
Set in a former casual bar and restaurant, Mason Studio designed interiors to meet Alobar’s ethos with integrity. The existing space enlisted opportunities within challenges from the former structure and its original elements. Materials were selected to support the dining experience, with consideration of placement to highlight function for both staff and guests. Resurfacing original finishes brightened the space, and drapery was incorporated to support noise and sound transmission from the entrance, bar and dining area. Following a path from bar to street, there was modification to adapt to the Alobar identity through a less-but-better approach. Most of the existing frame of the restaurant, including the main dining area tile floor, was retained to minimize unnecessary disposal of waste while creating an environment aligned with Alobar.
Alobar is timeless, yet iconic in its era and reputation, establishing longevity. Marble is a highlight to the bathroom, with curves present in the decor, complimenting natural wood finishes in contrast with white marble and intricate tile flooring. Mason Studio worked with the moods of Alobar’s many programming areas. From the bar - slightly darker in its lighting, furniture and fixtures to the dining room, which is a brighter, open area. Mason Studio designed a DJ booth, situated near the bar to support live music in a high-engagement section of the restaurant.
Adjacent to the main bar area lies a wine display, backlit and stocked with selections from around the world. A forward-thinking drink menu compliments this element, aiming to make Alobar a space that supports a variety of occasions, celebrations, and experiences. Suite 22 supplied the chairs and seating, which are structured yet elegant in their curvature and natural wood finish. Mobiles by Crow Art Design Build are a dynamic sculptural mobile that delivers a sense of buoyant wonder and joy – further complimenting the taste of Alobar.
